The Eradication of Gender Based Violence
A program was organized on the 14th of January 2023 by the Committee for The Eradication of Gender Based Violence, jointly with the Committee for Justice and Peace, for the parents of the children of Grade 01 of the Primary School, Nayakakanda (Western Province). The target group was selected considering past experiences as well as an understanding of the problems that presently confront both children and their families.
Main Objectives of the Program :
- To motivate parents in creating a happy family environment
- To raise awareness on gender based Violence
- To raise awareness on SDG – 5
Gender equality is at the heart of human rights and United Nations values. Gender- based discrimination is prohibited under almost every Human Rights Treaty. Despite much progress made in securing women's rights globally, millions of girls and women continue to experience discrimination and violence, being denied of their equality, dignity and autonomy and even their very life. This discrimination and violence against women and girls, deeply rooted in the fabric of societies, is persistent and systematic. We are invited to achieve SDG - 5 in 2030 and it is our responsibility to promote gender equality. The identified problems faced by the children attending this particular school are:
- Drug addicted parents
- Family separation
- Mother migration
- Single parenting
Extended families etc. Thus the lives of the children are challenged in numerous ways, resulting in serious drawbacks. They are not given priority and no support system exists within the family to enhance the education of the child. Therefore family being the primary source that contributes to the growth and development of the children the main focus of our program was to help parents to improve the quality of family life.
